The Squarespace social sharing logo is the image Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and iMessage show when someone shares a link to your site, and it is set in one place: the Social Sharing panel (search “social sharing” in the Home menu; it sits under Website, Website Tools), where you upload one image and save. That image is the fallback for every page. For a page, blog post, product or event to show its own image instead, you add an Alternate Social Sharing Image in that item’s settings under the Social tab. Size it at 1200 x 630 pixels, keep the important part in the middle, and clear the platform’s cache after changing it, because the grey box or old logo people complain about is almost always a cache rather than a Squarespace problem. Steps, sizes and the fixes are below.
How do you set the Squarespace social sharing logo?
- In the Home menu, search for Social Sharing and open the panel.
- Click + to upload an image, or pick one from the library.
- Click Save.
Squarespace’s social sharing guide describes this image as representing the whole site: it appears whenever a shared page has no image of its own. For most small sites that means the home page, the about page, the contact page and any service page without a featured image. Use a photo or a branded graphic with the logo, not the logo alone on white, because a logo cropped to 1.91:1 by Facebook usually loses its edges.
Squarespace social sharing logo vs the per-page image: how do you set each?
- Pages: Pages panel, hover over the page, click the settings cog, open the Social tab, upload the image, save.
- Blog posts and events: open the blog or events page, hover over the item, click Edit, then the Social tab.
- Products: double-click the product, Social tab.
- Portfolio sub-pages (7.1): click the three dots, Settings, Social tab.
Blog posts also use their thumbnail image (the Options tab) as the share image when no alternate is set, which is why a post with a good thumbnail shares well without extra work. Set the alternate only when the thumbnail is the wrong shape or you want a different message for social.
What size should the social sharing image be?
| Platform | Recommended | Minimum | Ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Facebook and LinkedIn | 1200 x 630 | 600 x 315 (Facebook shows small thumbnails under 600 wide) | 1.91:1 |
| X (Twitter) summary card | 1200 x 630 for large image, 400 x 400 for small | 300 x 157 | 1.91:1 or 1:1 |
| WhatsApp and iMessage | Same 1200 x 630 file | Under 300 KB and at least 300 x 200, or WhatsApp shows a small thumbnail | 1.91:1 |
| 1000 x 1500 (uses its own pin image, not og:image, when saved from the page) | 600 x 900 | 2:3 |
One 1200 x 630 JPG under 300 KB covers everything but Pinterest. Squarespace’s own note is that Facebook needs at least 200 x 200 and changes its preferences often; in practice 1200 x 630 has been the safe size for years. Keep text and faces inside the central 1000 x 500 area so square crops (used by some messaging apps) do not cut them off, and treat it like the favicon: a small file that shows up everywhere, worth ten minutes of care.
Why is the wrong image showing when I share?
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Old image after changing it | Facebook, LinkedIn and X cache previews for days | Paste the URL into the Facebook Sharing Debugger and click Scrape Again; LinkedIn Post Inspector for LinkedIn; X updates on its own after a while |
| Grey box, no image | No social sharing logo set and the page has no image, or the image is under 200 x 200 | Set the site-wide logo; check the size |
| Logo cropped badly | Logo uploaded alone at the wrong ratio | Upload a 1200 x 630 graphic with the logo placed inside it |
| Page image ignored | Alternate image not set; page has no thumbnail | Add the alternate under the Social tab |
| Blurry image | Uploaded small and scaled up | Re-export at 1200 x 630 |
| Different image on WhatsApp than Facebook | WhatsApp reads the tag once and caches on the phone | Nothing to fix on the site; new shares from other phones show the new image |
The debugger step matters more than any setting. After any change, scrape the URL once on Facebook’s tool and the new image appears; without that, the old preview can persist for a month. The same caching explains why a WordPress featured image looks wrong after a swap.
What does Squarespace actually output?
Squarespace writes the Open Graph og:image, og:title and og:description tags and the Twitter card tags into every page’s head automatically, using the social sharing logo, the alternate image, the page title (or SEO title if set) and the SEO description. You cannot edit those tags directly and do not need to; set the SEO title and description in the page’s SEO tab and the share preview follows. If a client asks for custom share text per page, it is the SEO description that changes it, which is the same field that controls the meta description Google shows.
What should the image contain?
- Home and service pages: a photo of the work or the person with the logo small in a corner.
- Blog posts: the post’s featured image; add a short title overlay only if the photo is generic.
- Products: the product on a clean background; Squarespace uses the first product image when no alternate is set.
- Events: date and venue as text on the image, because share previews are where most invitations are seen.
- Avoid: tiny logos on white, busy collages, and text near the edges.
I set the site-wide logo, the home page alternate and the blog thumbnails as one step in every Squarespace build, then run the site through the Facebook debugger before handover; it is the only way to see what a client’s friends will see when the link goes out on launch day. The rest of the launch checklist is in Squarespace tips and tricks.
Frequently asked questions
Search Social Sharing in the Home menu, upload a new image and save. For one page or post, open its settings, click the Social tab and add an Alternate Social Sharing Image. Then re-scrape the URL in Facebook’s Sharing Debugger to clear the cached preview.
1200 x 630 pixels (1.91:1) as a JPG under about 300 KB works on Facebook, LinkedIn, X, WhatsApp and iMessage. Squarespace’s minimum is 200 x 200; keep faces and text in the central area to survive square crops.
Facebook caches link previews. Paste the URL into the Facebook Sharing Debugger and click Scrape Again; the new image appears immediately. LinkedIn has a Post Inspector that does the same.
No social sharing logo is set and the page has no image of its own, or the image is too small. Upload a site-wide social sharing logo of at least 600 x 315 pixels and the grey box disappears.
Only as a fallback. Blog posts use their thumbnail image (Options tab) for shares unless you set an Alternate Social Sharing Image in the post’s Social tab.
Not directly. Squarespace generates the Open Graph and Twitter tags from the social sharing logo, alternate images, page title and SEO description. Change those settings and the tags update.
