To change the Squarespace site title on 7.1, open the Pages panel, click Edit on any page, hover over the header and click Edit Site Header, click the title (or logo), click the pencil icon, type the new name in the Site Title field and save. On 7.0 it is Design, then Logo & Title. That changes the name in your header. It does not automatically change the name Google shows in search results, the name in the browser tab, or the name on your Squarespace account dashboard, and those three are what people are usually trying to fix when they search for this. All four are below.

Where is the site title in Squarespace 7.1?

  1. In the Home menu, click Pages.
  2. Click Edit in the top-left corner of the site preview.
  3. Hover over the header and click Edit Site Header.
  4. Click your site title (or your logo, if you use one instead), then click the pencil icon.
  5. In the Site Title field, enter the new name. Squarespace allows up to 120 characters; keep it to your business name.
  6. Click Save, then exit the editor.

The reason this takes six clicks is that on 7.1 the site title is part of the header design, not a settings field. On 7.0 it is a settings field: open the Design panel, click Logo & Title, edit the Site Title (and the Tagline, which some 7.0 templates show next to it), and save. On the mobile app: Home tab, More, Logo & title.

Why does the old name still show in Google and the browser tab?

Because Squarespace builds the page title that Google and the browser use from a separate template. The setting is under SEO/AI Visibility, SEO Settings, Search Appearance on 7.1 (Marketing, SEO on 7.0), and the default home page format is your site title on its own, with inner pages set to page title, a separator and the site title. If you have ever typed a custom SEO title for the home page in that panel, or in the page’s own SEO tab, it overrides the site title and will keep showing the old name until you change it there.

After you change the title, Google keeps showing the old one until it recrawls the page, which can take days to weeks. Open Search Console, inspect the home page URL and request indexing to speed it up. If the result still shows a name you have not written anywhere, Google has decided to use text from your page instead of your title, which its title link documentation says it does when the title does not fit the page; where the SEO title is in WordPress explains that behaviour and it applies to Squarespace too.

Does changing the site title affect SEO?

Only through the title tag. If your business name is the same and you are only correcting a typo or capitalisation, nothing happens. If you are renaming the business, every page’s title tag changes at once, and rankings for searches of the old name will fade as searches for the new one start. That is a rebrand, not a title change, and it needs the old name kept somewhere on the site (a “formerly known as” line on the About page) so people searching for it still find you. It does not change your URLs, so no redirects are needed unless the domain changes as well; changing a Squarespace domain is the post for that.

Can you style the site title font and colour?

Yes, but in Site Styles rather than the title field. On 7.1 the site title follows your site-wide fonts; to give it its own font or size, open a page, click the paintbrush, then Fonts, Assign Styles, Site title (there is a separate Mobile site title). Colour depends on your header style: with a solid colour or gradient header, edit the header and set Navigation Color; with a theme or adaptive header, edit that colour theme in Site Styles and use the Site Title tweak. On 7.0, Design, Site Styles, and the tweak is usually called Site Title Color or sits under Header: Branding.

Should you use a logo instead of a site title?

If you have a logo, use it, and keep the site title filled in anyway. Squarespace uses the site title text for the browser tab, the SEO title format and the alt text on your logo, so an empty title means a page called “Your Site Title” in Google. Upload the logo in the same Edit Site Header panel (the Logo tab), ideally as an SVG or a PNG around 400 pixels wide on a transparent background, and check the image sizes that suit each spot on a site for the rest.

These small settings are the ones that decide how a business shows up in a Google result, which is why they are on the launch checklist for every Squarespace website I build; the Squarespace tips post has the rest of that list.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change the site title in Squarespace?

On 7.1: Pages, Edit, hover the header, Edit Site Header, click the title, click the pencil, type the new Site Title and save. On 7.0: Design, Logo & Title, edit the Site Title and save.

Why does Google still show my old Squarespace site title?

Google uses the SEO title, which comes from the format under SEO/AI Visibility, SEO Settings, Search Appearance (Marketing, SEO on 7.0), or from a custom SEO title on the page. Update that, then request indexing for the page in Search Console. It can take days to weeks to change.

How do I change the name in the browser tab on Squarespace?

The tab shows the SEO title. Change the format under SEO/AI Visibility, SEO Settings, Search Appearance (Marketing, SEO on 7.0), or set a custom SEO title in the page’s settings under the SEO tab.

How do I rename my Squarespace site on the dashboard?

The dashboard card uses the site title. Change the site title in the header editor and the dashboard follows, though not always immediately.

Does changing my Squarespace site title hurt SEO?

Not unless you are renaming the business. The title tag changes on every page, so rankings for the old name fade while the new name builds. URLs do not change, so no redirects are needed.

What is the character limit for a Squarespace site title?

120 characters, but keep it to your business name. The SEO title that Google shows should stay under about 60 characters.
