A Squarespace popup is built in: open Marketing, then Promotional Pop-Up (or search “pop-up” in the Home menu), pick a layout, choose whether it collects an email or sends people to a button, set when and how often it appears, switch on Display pop-up and save. No plugin, no code, and it works on every current plan from Core upward. The settings that decide whether the popup earns sign-ups or just annoys people are the timing and frequency ones, and Squarespace’s own guide flags that the full-screen layouts can hurt your mobile rankings, so those two things get most of the space below.

How do you add a promotional pop-up in Squarespace?

  1. In the Home menu, click Marketing, then Promotional Pop-Up.
  2. Click Change layout and choose a size: a small corner box, a centred card, or full-screen. Only some layouts include an image slot.
  3. Under Action, choose Sign up for a newsletter (an email field with storage to Squarespace Campaigns, Mailchimp or Google Drive) or Click a button (a link to any page, product or file).
  4. Under Content, write a headline and one line of body text. Squarespace’s guide warns that long text breaks the layout.
  5. Under Display & timing, choose which pages, when it appears (immediately, after a delay, or on scroll), how often, and whether it shows on mobile.
  6. Style it, switch on Display pop-up, save, and test in a private browser window; you will not see it while logged in.

Which timing and frequency settings actually work?

The defaults show the popup to everyone, immediately, on every page. That is the setting that trains visitors to close it without reading. The combination that gets sign-ups without complaints:

SettingRecommendedWhy
When it appearsOn scroll, at 40 to 60 percent of the page, or after 8 to 15 secondsThe visitor has read something first; an instant popup interrupts a page they have not seen
Which pagesBlog posts and resource pages only; never the checkout, contact or booking pagesSign-up intent is highest on content; anything on a conversion page competes with the conversion
Show againIn 30 days, or Never (the other options are next day, 1 week and 2 weeks)A second showing to the same person costs more goodwill than it gains
After sign-upTurn on “do not show again after newsletter signup”Obvious, and off by default
MobileSmall layout only, or offSee the next section

Squarespace has a Reset views button in the same panel; use it after changing the offer so returning visitors see the new one.

Does a Squarespace popup hurt SEO?

The popup itself does not, but the full-screen layout on mobile can. Since 2017 Google has treated interstitials that cover the main content on a phone straight from a search result as a page experience problem, and Squarespace says as much next to the layout picker. Two settings keep you clear of it: use a small or medium layout, and switch off Show on mobile unless the offer is worth the risk. Cookie banners and age checks are exempt; a newsletter popup is not. If the popup slows the page (Google’s page experience guidance names intrusive interstitials directly), it will show in the Core Web Vitals report you get once you connect Squarespace to Search Console.

How do you style the popup?

Under Style, click any part of the popup to see only the tweaks for that part: background, headline font and colour, body text, button, the email field and the close icon. It follows your site’s fonts by default. For anything the panel does not offer, such as rounded corners or a border, the popup can be targeted in Custom CSS:

.sqs-popup-overlay .sqs-modal-lightbox-content {
  border-radius: 12px;
}
.sqs-popup-overlay .sqs-popup-overlay-close {
  color: #ffffff;   /* close icon colour */
}

Keep the close icon obvious. A popup with a hidden close is the second most common complaint after popups that appear instantly, and Google’s interstitial guidance specifically calls out hard-to-dismiss overlays.

Popup, announcement bar, or a newsletter block?

UseWhenTrade-off
Promotional pop-upAn email list you actively send to, with a real incentive (a guide, a discount, a pricing PDF)Highest sign-up rate; interrupts, and needs the timing rules above
Announcement barA notice, an offer with a date, a booking windowNever interrupts; lower response. Announcement bar setup
Newsletter block on the pageLong posts and resource pages, placed after the contentZero annoyance; only seen by people who scroll
Both popup and barDifferent messages onlySame message twice trains people to ignore both

Why is the popup not showing?

  • You are logged in. Open the site in a private window.
  • Frequency already spent. You saw it once and the cookie remembers; click Reset views, or test in a fresh private window.
  • Wrong page. Check the page selection under Display & timing.
  • Mobile off. “Show on mobile” is a separate switch.
  • Plan. Promotional pop-ups need Core or higher; the Basic plan does not include them.
  • Toggle off. Display pop-up has to be on and the panel saved.

A popup is a five-minute build and a settings problem, which is why it is one of the last things I switch on in a Squarespace website design, after the pages it points to are worth the interruption; the Squarespace tips post covers the rest of that launch order.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add a popup on Squarespace?

Open Marketing, then Promotional Pop-Up. Choose a layout, set the action to newsletter sign-up or a button, add a headline and one line of text, set the pages, timing and frequency under Display & timing, switch on Display pop-up and save. Test in a private window.

Does Squarespace have a free popup?

Yes, the promotional pop-up is built in on Core, Plus and Advanced plans with no plugin. The Basic plan does not include it.

Can I show a Squarespace popup on only one page?

Yes. Under Display & timing, choose the specific pages instead of the whole site.

Why can I not see my Squarespace popup?

You are logged in, the frequency cookie has already shown it to you, mobile is switched off, the page is not selected, or Display pop-up is off. Open a private window and check each setting.

Do popups hurt SEO on Squarespace?

Full-screen popups on mobile, shown immediately from a search result, can count against page experience. Use a small layout, delay it or trigger on scroll, and consider turning it off on mobile.

How do I collect names with a Squarespace popup?

The popup newsletter action collects email only. To collect names, set the action to Click a button and link to a page with a newsletter block, which supports name fields.
